Slide Rule
This is a Slide Rule. It was developed in the 1630's and evolved to have a movable slide between two other fixed blocks of wood in the 1650's. Unfortunately the device was used very little for almost 200 years, and became popular in North America in the late 1880's. It remained the most popular calculating machine until the hand-held electronic calculator.
