1441 Processing Unit
The processing unit contains the core storage used to store data and instructions. It also contains the electronic circuitry and registers for carrying out arithmetic and other operations on data, for interpreting instructions, and for controlling the other components of the 1440.

The 1441 Processing Unit can be thought of as containing three sections: control, arithmeticlogical, and core storage. The control section directs and coordinates the entire system as a single multipurpose machine.

1442 Card Read Punch
This input/output unit reads information from punched cards and enters it into core storage. The card read punch could also punch cards with information from core storage.

The 1442 Card Read Punch, a combined reader and punch unit for the 1440 Data Processing System is available in two models. In addition, the 1442 Card Reader, Model 4, a card read unit, is available as a card input to the 1440 System.

1443 Printer
This unit is used to prepare printed output, and can print a complete line of up to 120 or 144 characters at one time (depending on the model).

The 1443 Printer provides printed output for the 1440 system and is available in two models. When equipped with a standard 52-character typebar, Models 1 and 2 have a rated speed of 150 and 240 lines per minute respectively. With the Selective Character Set special feature, the rate of printing can vary from 120 to 600 lpm.

1447 Console
The 1447 Console is designed to give the operator external control of setting up and checking system operation through non-operating keys, lights, and switches. Several features facilitate program testing.

This console provides for operator control of the 1440 and for access to information within the computer. It can be equipped with a console typewriter for keyboard input to the system and also for use as a low-volume output printer.

1311 Disk Storage Drive
This unit provides for the storage of large amounts of data on disk packs. The information stored on the packs serves as both input and output to the 1440. Up to five 1311 Disk Storage Drives can be attached to the 1440 Data Processing System. On these drives can be mounted individual disk packs with a storage capacity of 2 million alphanumeric characters per pack. In this way a total of 10 million characters can be made available to the system at any time. The disk packs can be removed by any the operator and replaced with others, in effect providing the system with virtually unlimited disk storage.
